There was consternation among the Turks at this steady Christian advance. Ibn al-Qalanisi recorded the alarm among the leaders:

Yaghi Siyan, lord of Antioch, therefore hastened to his city, and sent his son to all the other cities and districts, appealing for aid and support, imploring them to hurry to the Holy War, while he set about fortifying Antioch and expelling its Christian population. On the 2nd of Shawwal [12 September] the Frankish armies descended on Baghras and turned their attack towards the territories of Antioch, whereupon those who were in the forts and strong places close to Antioch revolted against us and killed their garrisons, except for a few who were able to escape. The people of Artah did likewise, and called for re-inforcements from the Franks. During Shaban a comet appeared in the west. It rose for a space of about 20 days, and then disappeared.
